Things to do in Galway

If you need some inspiration for your stay in Galway, here’s our pick of the best things to see and do in the city.

As European Capital of Culture 2020, you won't be short of things to do in Galway this year.

Galway Cathedral
Built in 1950, Galway Cathedral is a modern stone-built cathedral with beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Romanesque-inspired architecture. The cathedral is only ten minutes away from our Galway hotel on foot, and the perfect place for some quiet reflection.

We recommend: taking your time admiring the impressive stained glass windows.

Galway City Museum
Located on the banks of the River Corrib just a two minute walk from our hotel, Galway City Museum is home to a number of popular exhibitions exploring local history through the ages. It’s free to enter, and open each week from Tuesday until Saturday.

We recommend: going upstairs for incredible views of the Spanish Arch.

Quay Street
Whether you want shops, cafes, restaurants or pubs, there’s something for everyone to enjoy on Galway’s popular Quay Street, which is also home to our Galway hotel. From an afternoon of retail therapy to a romantic evening meal, this vibrant part of the Latin Quarter is just  one of the bustling streets in the city.

We recommend: visiting in the evening to hear traditional Irish folk  music played live in the pubs.

Galway Market
Galway Market has been a part of local life for centuries, and it’s a brilliant place to visit to experience the heart of the city. With hundreds of stalls selling everything from locally-made crafts to fresh produce, the market is open every weekend and Bank Holiday and is just three minutes away from our Galway hotel on foot.

We recommend: taking a peek inside the beautiful St Nicholas’ Church, which overlooks the market.

Galway Bay
To appreciate the true beauty of Galway’s coastal location, a walk along Galway Bay is a must. Along the way make sure you look out for the traditional fishing boats, the Galway hookers, which are designed to withstand the strong seas and unforgiving elements around the bay.

We recommend: playing a round of golf at Galway Bay Golf Club.

Salthill Promenade
If you really want to experience the fresh sea air, make sure you go for a walk along Salthill Promenade. If you’re visiting with children, there are play parks along the way, plus pubs and restaurants for the grown-ups to enjoy.

We recommend: taking a leap off the diving board into the sea at Black Rock

Exploring beyond Galway

If you want to explore the beyond the confines of the city, there are countless great attractions and places of interest just a short drive or day trip from Galway. Here are some of our favourite things to see and do in the local area.

  • Taking a bus tour through Connemara National Park
  • Spending an afternoon at Athlone Castle and Visitor Centre
