Edinburgh City

Edinburgh is bursting with things to do, places to see, and festivals to get stuck in with! Take a look below to learn more about our top attractions or explore our full Edinburgh City Guide.

Edinburgh Festival

It is sometimes mistaken that the Edinburgh Festival is just one festival. It is instead a series of arts and cultural festivals that take place in Edinburgh during the summer every year. The festivals attract massive audiences from all around the world, most of whom class the whole event as the world’s largest cultural festival.

The Edinburgh Festival dates back to 1947 when the Edinburgh International Festival (EIF) was founded to promote peace in the years following World War II. That year, eight theatrical companies “gatecrashed” the international festival by organising their own event, which became the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (EFF), also called the Edinburgh Fringe, or the Fringe. The EIF and the Fringe are separate organisations, each running different programmes in the summer. However, their running dates overlap, making Edinburgh a top UK summer destination buzzing with culture, excitement and mind-blowing entertainment.

Edinburgh Castle

A huge fortress that dominates the Edinburgh skyline, Edinburgh Castle has stood since the 12th century and is the city’s oldest surviving building. Explore the castle’s history from the monarchs to the military base and discover the exciting story Edinburgh Castle has to tell.

The castle is open 9.30am - 6pm in summer and 9.30am - 5pm in winter and tickets cost £16.00 for adults and £9.60 for children. Edinburgh Castle is one of Scotland’s most popular tourist attractions seeing over 1 million visitors per year and it is less than 15 minutes’ walk from our Edinburgh hotel!

National Museum of Scotland

Scotland has an extremely rich history, so where better to learn more about it than the National Museum of Scotland? Featuring galleries and artefacts from hundreds of years of history, you’re guaranteed to have a fascinating experience discovering Scottish heritage, standing in awe of the natural world, learning about the artefacts that inspired Disney Pixar’s Brave, and immersing yourself in world cultures.

The Museum is open 10am -5pm daily with free admission and is only a 12 minute walk from Jurys Inn Edinburgh.

Edinburgh as a starting point

If Edinburgh is your holiday base there are a number of exciting destinations within easy reach.

If you are planning a trip to Glasgow there are those who consider it the museum city. There is the Transport Museum, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and People’s Palace to name a few. What’s more, you can stop off at our Glasgow hotel for the night while you’re there!

If you are on a trip around Scotland and looking to catch more entertainment while you’re here, then Aberdeen has plenty of shows and concerts on at His Majesty’s Theatre or Cowdray Hall. Our Aberdeen hotel is only a short distance away from both of these venues.

Thinking of travelling south of the border? Newcastle is the closest major English city to Edinburgh and features plenty of attractions to make the trip worthwhile, such as the Grade I listed building - Theatre Royal - and the Great North Museum. During your visit you could stay the night at our Jurys Inn Newcastle hotel or Gateshead hotel, both conveniently situated in the city centre.
