Molineux Stadium – Wolverhampton Wanderers

Situated in the heart of Wolverhampton, the Molineux Stadium is home to West Midlands football club Wolverhampton Wanderers. First opened in 1889, the ground has seen a rich and varied football history and is named after local merchant Benjamin Molineux who purchased the land in 1744 which the stadium was eventually built on.

The first ever league game on the ground took place in 1889 and a crowd of 4,000 spectators watched Wolves beat Notts County 2-0. In 1923, expansion started on the stadium and by 1932 Molineux had its well-known four stands. In 1953, Wolverhampton became one of the first clubs to install floodlights which attracted many European teams to arrange mid-week friendlies with the Wolves, attracting fans from across the country.

The stadium has undergone many redevelopments and the current 30,852 all-seated ground was officially re-opened in 1993 and was at the time one of the largest in England. Future of Molineux sees plans to raise capacity to 50,000, but there is no time-frame for the developments.

Wolves invite visitors on a number of stadium tours throughout the year and allows fans a chance to the first team dressing room, executive boxes, the dugouts and much more.

The stadium is just a 50 minute journey from our Birmingham hotel. Walk 15 minutes to Birmingham New Street station and take the train to Wolverhampton. From here, it is just a 13 minute walk to Molineux Stadium.
