The Hawthorns – West Bromwich Albion

Built in 1900, The Hawthorns is home to West Midlands club West Bromwich Albion and was the first ground to be built in the 20th century. Officially opened on September  3rd 1900, the ground hosted its first Division One game, a 1-1 draw with Derby County to a crowd of over 20,000.

Over the Century, The Hawthorns continually grew in capacity and in 1937 the ground reached its all-time attendance record when 64,815 fans watched The Baggies beat Arsenal 3-1 in the FA Cup quarter-final. From 1964 overall capacity was gradually reduced with the introduction of seating and by 1994 all the terraces were replaced, making The Hawthorns a 27,000 all-seated stadium.

The ground has seen dramatic Premier League action and in 2005 a record all-seated crowd of 27,751 watched West Brom avoid relegation and keep their top flight status with a 2-0 win over Portsmouth on the last day of the season.

WBA offers a chance for fans to see behind the scenes of the famous Black Country club with many stadium tours per year.
