Hotspot: His Majesty’s Theatre Aberdeen

History of His Majesty’s Theatre Aberdeen

Since its opening in 1906, His Majesty’s Theatre has remained one of the UK’s finest auditoriums. It’s the largest theatre in north-east Scotland, with a seating capacity of more than 1,400.

The original building was designed by English architect Frank Matcham,  the mastermind behind Blackpool Grand and London’s Hackney Empire. The theatre cost £35,000 to build and boasts an incredible architectural style. Highlights include the copper domed tower and the concrete statue of Tragedy and Comedy.

Little Red Riding Hood was the very first production held here. In March 2004, the theatre closed to allow for refurbishment works. A five-storey triangular structure was built east of the building, constructed from Kemnay granite to match the original design. New front-of-house facilities were added, including a coffee shop, restaurant, box office and hospitality area. The theatre reopened in August 2005 with an opening ceremony attended by Prince Edward.

In 1973, the theatre became a category A listed building of special architectural interest. It’s twinned with His Majesty’s Theatre in Perth, Australia, and is one of only two buildings with its name. Today, it’s Aberdeen’s principal theatre, attracting visitors from across the city and beyond.  

How to get to the theatre

His Majesty’s Theatre’s main entrance is on Rosemount Viaduct. It’s a stone’s throw from Aberdeen Central Library and a 10-minute walk from Leonardo Hotel Aberdeen.
