This year marks the 117th celebration of music in what is now known as the BBC Proms. From July to September, over 70 concerts are performed by international orchestral and operatic superstars in informal settings, centered at the Royal Albert Concert Hall. Over the years, events have expanded, with Proms Plus and Proms in the Park there are various ways to experience the show. International orchestras will take the stage, including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra on the 1st and Budapest Festival Orchestra, for Proms Plus, on the 2nd. The illustrious Philadelphia Philharmonic Orchestra is back finally, to perform for a sold-out concert hall. Their repertoire includes, among others, Sibelius’s Finlandia and Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances.
For an hour, Organist Thierry Escaich will regale the Royal Albert Hall to J.S. Bach and Listz along with his own composition and improvisation, on Sunday the 4th. Prom 69 features Anne-Sophie Mutter with her violin and the accompanying Pittsburg Philharmonic; they will be playing from Wagner’s Lohengrin. Promming it the day-of is just ₤5.
Famous composers will be featured in all of their symphonic grandeur. Holst’s Planets will be preformed and a full concert of choral Beethoven. For fun, on Friday the 2nd from 10 to 11 pm, the special Audience Choice concert allows the audience to select the pieces they to hear.
But the big party has to be the closing day, Prom 74 on Saturday September 10th. From 7:30 to 10:45 pm, the Royal Albert Concert Hall will be filled with a wide range of classical and patriotic compositions, including Parry’s Jerusalem, and performers, including super-star pianist Lang Lang and soprano Susan Bullock. Proms in the Park will be in Hyde Park and piping the music to the masses outside. But the party will also include festivities at locations in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Couple these musical events with the acts lined up the play the O2 in London this September the city has a wide range of live music to choose from.
These are just some of the events slated on the September calendar, but proves that once again, this year’s Proms promises to be an unmissable and unforgettable event.
