Smiles Ahead

Stop press: Gordon Brown comes out top of most trustworthy political smile poll

There has been plenty of media attention on the smiles of politicians during this election campaign but now for the first time a poll commissioned by Jurys Inn hotel group has asked the British public what they think. Some 4,000 Brits were given pictures of 20 celebrity smiles (each with the top half of the face covered up) and the politician with the most trusted smile was one - Gordon Brown!

In fact Gordon Brown, whose smile featured in the recent Conservative billboard campaign, has another reason to be cheerful. The survey also showed that an overwhelming 93 per cent of Brits agreed that a smile has the power to influence what they think of someone.

Gordon Brown pipped Vince Cable to the top slot. However neither came close to celebrity comedian and TV presenter Stephen Fry who topped the UK-wide poll conducted by Jurys Inn – the hotel group which lists its employees’ friendly smiles as one of its greatest assets.

Gordon Brown came sixth in the list of twenty celebrities. Injured England star David Beckham came second and X Factor judge Cheryl Cole was third, followed by Kelly Brook in fourth place. Charlotte Church completed the top five.

Vince Cable who was seventh managed to outshine his colleague Nick Clegg on the smile stakes who only managed place seventeen on the list.

The Lib Dem leader may have enjoyed a surge in the opinion polls recently but his grin was said by the British public to have looked more like a smirk than a smile.

John Brennan, CEO of hotel group Jurys Inn said: ''Much has been written about the smiles of the political contenders so we at Jurys Inn thought it was time the British public themselves were asked. We pride ourselves on our warm welcome and a genuine and friendly smile goes a long way - 82 per cent of our guests say they would stay with us again because of our warm and friendly service. We hope the interesting results from this survey will raise a smile across the country.”

The picture survey consisted of political party leaders, their wives, prominent MPs and celebrities.

Shadow Chancellor George Osborne came last on the top twenty list, beaten by Russell Brand.

There was unfortunate news for England fans who trust Fabio Capello to lead our boys to World Cup success, his smile came third last on the list.

Conservative leader David Cameron emerged thirteenth.

Sarah Brown has the most trusted smile among the leaders’ wives - her beaming grin came tenth on the list.

The study found the average person smiles 17 times a day, but fakes it on at least three of those occasions.
