1 in 3 Irish people check their phone before kissing their other half in the morning

submited Mon 15 Jun, 2015

Jurys Inn analyses how we use (and abuse!) our smartphones, and ranks the habits that really get our goat

Ireland’s love affair with technology is heating up while our offline relationships could be heading for the rocks, with one in three of us (30%) confessing to checking our phone as soon as we wake up, before even kissing our partner. That’s according to new research from Jurys Inn, which exposes Ireland’s technology obsession and ranks the smartphone habits that make our blood boil! The hotel group is encouraging Irish people to switch off from technology this summer and make the most of their time off by exploring new cities and landmarks instead.

According to the study, being ditched by friends in favour of technology is our top pet peeve - with a whopping 69% of Irish people stating that friends using their phone while mid-conversation is the most annoying smartphone habit!

Other smartphone habits that drive us completely up the wall are: taking and sharing pictures of food on social media (35%); people bumping into you because they’re distracted by their phone (33%); playing music loudly in public (24%), and the dreaded ‘selfie’ (23%).

When asked about how often they check their beloved smartphone, 16% admit to looking at their phone too many times to count! The majority of Irish people (50%) admit to stealing cheeky glances at their phone more than 10 times a day, with 11% checking it 50+ times to make sure they haven’t missed any texts or tweets.

Not only are we obsessed with keeping our gadgets within arm’s reach, more than 1 in 5 of us (22%) feel guilty about how much we use our phones and wish we could kick the habit.

Suzanne Cannon, Group Marketing Manager at Jurys Inn said: “We understand how important it is for Irish people to stay connected wherever they are, that’s why we offer free Wi-Fi in all our hotels, but our research shows that we could all stand to benefit from backing away from our smartphones every once in a while! A trip to a new city is the perfect time to completely switch off from technology and explore the incredible array of landmarks here in Ireland and abroad - without the distraction of a beeping phone.”

With summer just around the corner, Jurys Inn also asked Irish people about their how they use their phone abroad. When it comes to taking technology on holiday, Irish people wouldn’t dream of leaving their shiny gadget other half behind! We continue to whisper sweet nothings to our mobiles when we hit the beach, with the study revealing that:

-       almost half (49%) use our phones to keep up with our personal emails; 38% to keep up with social media, and 37% to browse online

-       a shamefaced one in five of us (22%) are guilty of using our smartphone for work

Jurys Inn operates 28 city centre hotels in Ireland, the UK and Prague. For those who want to stay connected at all times, the hotel group offers free Wi-Fi in all public areas and bedrooms of its hotels, with free premium Wi-Fi available for those who book online.
