Lost but not least: Jurys Inn reveals most memorable items left behind in hotel rooms

submited Wed 09 Dec, 2015

Ever had that feeling that you’re forgetting something? To mark International Lost and Found Day on Friday December 11th, Jurys Inn has asked guests about some of the most common (and most unusual!) items left behind in hotel rooms, and is encouraging people to ‘double-check before checking out’ to avoid that dreaded feeling on the drive home.

Over the past year, Jurys Inn has discovered a whopping 70,000 forgotten items, from the banal to the bizarre, in its 36 city centre hotels this year alone. That’s around 38 items left behind by guests in every hotel every week.

We all get cold feet now and again, but it seems that many of us are suffering from a case of real-life frosty foot-sicles, with Jurys Inn finding that one in ten (11%) Irish people have left their shoes behind after an overnight hotel stay. The cold chill isn’t limited to the feet either, with 7% of guests admitting to going commando, having left their underwear behind in their hotel room.

The housekeeping staff at Jurys Inn have seen their fair share of fake gnashers in hotel rooms, with 4% of those surveyed admitting to leaving their false teeth behind. A further 5% report forgetting to bring their partner with them on check-out - whether this was intentional or not is yet to be confirmed.

Top five things left behind in hotel rooms:

  1. Phone Chargers
  2. Keys
  3. Money and Jewellery
  4. Toiletries
  5. Shoes

When asked about the strangest forgotten items, responses from Irish hotel guests included a snorkel, rosary beads, a draft of their will, and a book on Dana’s life story!

Suzanne Cannon, Group Marketing Manager at Jurys Inn said: “We always try to make our guests feel at home when they stay in our hotels, and just like any home, personal possessions can be left in all sorts of unusual places. Our hotel staff have encountered a host of forgotten items this year, ranging from phone chargers and glasses to more unusual items such as false teeth. We always recommend doing a full sweep of the bedroom, including drawers and wardrobes, before checkout to make sure that you’re not left with that feeling of forgetting something on the way back home.”
