Liverpool is a fantastic city for truly unique attractions from The Beatles Story and dynamic Alma de Cuba bar, to two stunning cathedrals and more. As our city guide offers a full list of Liverpool attractions, we’ve decided to delve into some nooks and crannies to find you the quirkiest places to grab a bite in one of the UK’s most vibrant of cities.
Bursting with a lively atmosphere, Mediterranean hospitality, brightly coloured décor, and a mouth-watering menu, Bakchich is one of Liverpool’s secret treasures. Starting out on the Christmas Markets of Liverpool, this fantastic restaurant found its home on Bold Street and infused it with Arabic food culture and traditions, and added a French twist to Lebanese street food for a truly memorable dining experience. Ranging from £3.50 to around £10 in price, you can choose from a varied menu of Shawarma wraps, mezze platters, grills, and more.
The Cow & Co Cafe
A great place to grab some lunch after exploring Liverpool’s Albert Dock, The Cow & Co Café offers a tasty menu of bagels, sandwiches, toast, and fresh waffles (the peanut butter, banana & maple syrup option is utterly scrumptious), with a varied selection of drinks from Artisan coffee and loose leaf tea (including ‘Fairy Wings’ tea) to Liverpool craft beers and speciality wines. Offering a nice blend of café and shop - you can also peruse a selection of quirky, affordable products from copper candlesticks to magazines.
The Cow & Co Café décor is fresh and light, and the atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed, friendly, and inviting- everything you might want from an eatery with a twist.
Mowgli Street Food
Home to delectable ‘Indian Street Market dishes’ and situated on Bold Street, this restaurant not only has a quirky décor of exposed brickwork, wood furniture, thick ropes, poles, cage shelving, and more, food is served when it’s ready, in true street food style.
The menu is an exciting and varied collection of Indian dishes but not the high street version - Mowgli Street Food offers visitors a very different Indian dining experience. If you’re feeling adventurous ‘Tiffin Boxes for One’ offers ‘Food Roulette’ costing £12 for the meat version and £10 for vegetarian, alternatively, you can pick something from ‘The Hindu Kitchen’ (£4-5), ‘Street Meats’ (£5-7), or ‘Street Chat’ (£3.50-6) sections.
Situated on the Albert Dock and overlooking the Tate Gallery, Gusto Liverpool offers a lively and inviting atmosphere with the motto ‘Con Amici’ (eating with friends). With exposed brick, posters, leather banks, industrial beams and bars, candelabras and a myriad of different lights, the décor offers a nice twist on your dining experience.
The menu is Italian in essence but offers cuisine with a Gusto flair from ‘Gusto Dough Petals’ and ‘Gusto Burger’ (with melted mozzarella) to ‘Slow Roast Pork Pizza’ and ‘Roast Fillet of Cod Wrapped in Prosciutto Ham’. Offering more of a ‘gourmet’ Italian experience, this quirky restaurant décor, unique menu, and welcoming vibe all provide the ingredients for a memorable night amongst friends and family.
Camp and Furnace
A truly quirky venue, Camp and Furnace offer a ‘restaurant, bar, indoor festival site, music venue, pop-up event space, conference location, cultural hub and all-round surprising destination’. The large warehouse-style space gives it an open and relaxed atmosphere, with interesting décor, bare bulbs, and wood-burning stove to bring this homely ‘cabin culture’ and friendly festival vibe together.
Situated on Greenland Street, ‘The Lobby’ is open all week for food offering a Northern Europe inspired menu, while Fridays and Saturdays offer ‘Food Slams’ filled with street food and drink from a range vendors, accompanied by a club soundtrack in ‘The Furnace’ section of the venue. Sundays offer chilled family time with a delicious roast and homemade dessert on the communally seated table of ‘The Furnace’.
If you’re looking for cheap hotel rooms in Liverpool, our Jurys Inn hotel on Keel Warf (next to the Albert Dock) is perfectly situated for all that the city has to offer.
