The race is often considered to be the world's most famous half-marathon event. The event is sometimes also referred to as the Bupa Great North Run, though the event is now sponsored by Morrisons. The race attracts more than 50,000 runners yearly. More than 57,000 runners took part in the 2014 event. Many Olympic medallists and track stars participate in the race every year.
The race garners a lot of media attention every year and it is scheduled to be broadcast live on BBC television and BBC Radio 5 on the day of the event.
