Britain on a Shoestring: The Best Value Fish and Chips Aug 31
Email a Friend

While Britain is home to some of the world’s finest eateries, it is also the destination of choice if you want to dine on a budget. David Beckham delighted value-seekers recently when he included Tony Lane’s pie and mash shop in Waltham Abbey in his top 10 British destinations.

And it got us here at Jurys Inn thinking. Affordable food is attainable in Britain, and you don’t get much more affordable than fish and chips.

The best thing about fish and chip shops is that they’re present in their abundance around Britain. In fact, it has been reported that over 10,500 fish and chip shops adorn the isles.
However, we have noticed a bit of an anomaly when it comes to the pricing of Britain’s best loved takeaway. While fish and chips are indisputably among the cheapest of foods to eat, prices around Britain vary hugely.

According to price comparison site, What Price? The price of a standard dish (a portion of fish with a medium portion of chips) can range from as little as £2.50 in one restaurant in Suffolk to £9.99 in another restaurant in Cambridge.  The UK average price for fish and chips, it says, is £3.30, not bad for the price of your dinner.

It appears the further north you go, the less you pay for your grub, with fish and chips to be had in Newcastle for as little as £3.

While we’re all for affordable dining, it is important that you get high quality, and value for your money so you must make sure you get something delicious. Jurys Inn has done a bit of research and we’re reliably informed that among the best fish and chip shops in Britain are Chamberlains in Birmingham, Toffs in London, Seniors in Lancashire and the Ashvale in Aberdeen.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, and we don’t claim to be restaurant critics, so we will have to put it out to a public vote. Who do you think sells the best fish and chips in Britain? And what does a medium portion of fish and chips cost in your local chip shop?
