Things to do in Southampton

Whether or not you’re new to the city, it always helps to have a different perspective on things to do and places to see. To help you plan your trip through the city, here’s our pick of the best attractions in and around Southampton city centre.

SeaCity Museum
At The SeaCity Museum you’ll find out more about the city’s maritime past, as well as a unique insight into the ill-fated voyage of the Titanic, whose journey began in the port of Southampton. The museum is also home to an art gallery, and is just 9 minutes away from our Southampton hotel on foot.

We recommend: keeping an eye on the website for family-friendly events if you’re visiting with children.

Southampton Tudor House and Garden
After reopening in 2011 after a long period of renovation, Southampton’s first ever museum is a must-visit on your trip to the city. The Tudor House and Garden reveals over 800 years of history, with artefacts including The Southampton Book of Hours and the Penny Farthing.

We recommend: taking a guided walk through the Old Town after your visit to the Tudor House

Solent Sky
Home to an impressive array of aircraft including fighter jets and early aeroplanes, the Solent Sky Museum is a great place to take anyone interested in the history of flight. There’s even an exhibit exploring space travel, perfect for astronaut enthusiasts and children.

We recommend: checking out the impressive collection of model aeroplanes, including one of the biggest ‘Flies Right Off the Ground’ (FROG) model collections in the world.

Mayflower Theatre
In the evening, go and see a show at the Mayflower Theatre in the city centre. From drama to comedy, live music and dance, there’s something for everyone to enjoy at this popular cultural attraction.

We recommend: checking what’s on in advance, and booking your tickets online.

St Mary’s Stadium
Home to Southampton FC, St Mary’s Stadium is a must-visit for football fans no matter which team you support. Book tickets to watch a match, or take the stadium tour to see behind-the-scenes, including the corporate boxes and standing pitchside.

We recommend: taking a look around the club shop for unique memorabilia.

Paultons Park
Located a short drive away from Southampton, Paultons Park is a popular theme park with families of all ages. Home to Peppa Pig World, younger children will love meeting their favourite characters and riding on the smaller rides, while older kids and adults can explore the main park.

We recommend: downloading the park map onto your smartphone for easy navigating.

Hawthorns Urban Wildlife Centre
Located on Southampton Common, the Hawthorns Urban Wildlife Centre is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The park is a sensitive environment and only open for limited hours, so make sure you check opening times before you visit.

We recommend: having a cup of tea at the on-site cafe if the garden is closed when you visit.

Exploring beyond Southampton

For those staying with us for a few days or more, you’ll have time to explore beyond the city. Here’s a handful of our favourite sights and attractions nearby:

  • Spinnaker Tower, HMS Victory and the D-Day Museum in Portsmouth
  • The many beaches on Hayling Island
  • Osborne House and Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight
  • Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • North Solent National Nature Reserve
