Things to do in Prague

Old Town Hall and Astronomical Clock

The Old Town Hall and Astronomical Clock is a Prague must-see. Dating back to the 14th Century, the Town Hall has an fascinating history, having played a significant role in many of the city’s major events including the selection of the King of Bohemia and the bombardment by tanks in 1945.

Despite weathering a colourful history of events, the Town Hall and Astronomical Clock are still standing, with the clock tower oozing beautiful Gothic architecture. The unique Astronomical Clock draws in crowds of tourists every hour to view the procession of apostles, running everyday between 9am and 11pm.

The Old Town Hall and Astronomical Clock is a leisurely 20-minute walk from Jurys Inn Prague.

Old Town Bridge Tower

Prague is full of beautiful historic architectural styles and the Old Bridge Tower is no exception. Considered one of the best examples of High Gothic architecture in all of Europe, the bridge tower forms the entrance to the Charles Bridge from Old Town.

Although originally built for defence, the building features many sculptural decorations with unique and beautiful statues and reliefs, making it an important part of the Royal Way and a Prague monument not to be missed.

Opening hours are dependent on the time of year but roughly vary between 10am to 6-10pm. The Tower is a 25-minute walk from Jurys Inn Prague and full admission costs around £2.50.

Locally Produced Beers

In Old Town, you’ll be able to see and visit the Town Square, the Town Hall with its famous Astronomical Clock, the Municipal House, the Franz Kafka Exposition, and the State Theatre. The Jewish Quarter, which is home to the Jewish museum (a restored Spanish synagogue with a Moorish-style dome), is located within the Old Town.

The Czech Republic is very proud of their locally produced beers and regards them as a national treasure. However, discovering the best Czech beers can be a challenge, with a general difference of opinion as to which is the geatest.

The Gambrinus is popular, though Kozel’s Medium won the best Czech beer award, while many locals claim the Pilsner Urquell is the best. The easiest way to judge is, of course, to try for yourself. Here are three fantastic pubs ready to serve you the local brews:

U Houdků is a cheap neighbourhood pub with hearty brews from the ÄŒeský Krumlov area (served in light and dark versions) with typical Czech pub food and an easy 25-minute walk from our hotel.

U Provaznice: This is a fantastic pub with great décor. It’s reasonably priced and draws in a nice mix of locals and tourists for an enjoyable beer discovery evening. U Provaznice is a short 20 minute walk from Jurys Inn Prague.

U Vejvodů: A leisurely 24 minute walk takes you to U Vejvodů, which offers a range of local beers at a good price (£1.20 for half a litre). The decor is unique, and provides a fantastic atmosphere in which to enjoy a drink or two.
