Brush up on Newcastle’s history and scientific achievements at the Discovery Museum. Entry is free, and you’ll find a range of exhibits and interactive activities ideal for a family day out.

The world’s first steam turbine-powered steamship, Turbinia, is among the museum’s most popular attractions. The 1894-built vessel was the world’s fastest ship in its day, earning the nickname ‘The Ocean Greyhound’. It’s now listed in the National Historic Fleet, and you can view it from galleries on three levels at the Discovery Museum.

 

2. Visit St James’ Park

St James’ Park is the home of the city’s famous football team, Newcastle United. Located in the heart of Newcastle, it’s the eighth-largest football stadium in England and has been the Magpies’ home since 1892. 

Learn more about the history of the club and the stadium with an access-all-areas stadium tour, or attend a fixture and watch the Toon Army in action. Don’t forget to pop into Shearer’s Bar, where you’ll find a wide range of drinks and delicious food, including Sunday lunch.

 

3. Stroll around Jesmond Dene

Looking for a serene escape from the city’s hustle and bustle? Jesmond Dene is the place to be. Enjoy a tranquil walk through this beautiful green space filled with native and exotic trees. Watch for the woodland’s wildlife, including red squirrels, kingfishers and great spotted woodpeckers.

Make your way to the park’s heart and find Pet’s Corner. This fantastic attraction is home to various animals, including alpacas, goats and rabbits, and is perfect for families.

 

4. Dine by the River Tyne at the Quayside

Home to some of Newcastle’s finest restaurants, the Quayside is the perfect place to grab a bite.
