Things to do in Cork

If you need some inspiration for things to see and do during your stay in Cork, here’s our pick of the very best sights and attractions in the city.

Blackrock Castle Observatory
Dating back to the 16th century, Blackrock Castle has been adopted by the Cork Institute of Technology as an observatory for science and astronomy. The observatory is just a short bus ride away from Jurys Inn Cork, or an hour on foot, and perfect if you love discovering more about space.

We recommend: taking the castle and dungeon tour to learn about the history of the observatory through the ages. Elizabeth Fort

Over the centuries, Elizabeth Fort has been used as everything from a female prison to a military base and police barracks. Today Elizabeth Fort is a fascinating historical attraction, with the added bonus of amazing views from the fort walls.

We recommend: taking a camera to snap photos in the stocks and with the soldiers.

Cork City Hall
While in Cork, a trip to see the Georgian architecture of the City Hall is a must. With limestone pillars and a copper-domed clock tower, it’s undoubtedly one of the finest buildings in the city and just a five minute walk away from our centrally-located hotel.

We recommend: visiting at night when the hall is illuminated to truly appreciate the architecture.

Old English Market
Cork’s Old English Market is described as ‘the best covered market in the UK and Ireland’ by celebrity chef Rick Stein, and it’s easy to see why. With a huge variety of small-scale producers selling fresh food, this is a must-visit for any food lover.

We recommend: going for a delicious, freshly-cooked lunch at Farmgate Cafe on the second floor

St Fin Barre’s Cathedral
Located right at the heart of the city, St Fin Barre’s Cathedral dates back to the 19th century, with its impressive Gothic architecture making it an unmissable sight in Cork. Make sure you have a camera to take pictures of the impressive facade.

We recommend: hiring a guide for an informative, personalised tour of the cathedral.

Fitzgerald Park
Located on the banks of the River Lee and spanning an impressive 18 acres, Fitzgerald Park is a great place to unwind and escape the hustle and bustle of the city centre. If you’re visiting Cork with children, there are some great play areas alongside the landscaped gardens and sculptures to let them run wild and burn off some energy.

We recommend: visiting Cork Public Museum, which is located right at the heart of the park.

Cork City Gaol
To discover more about Ireland through the ages, including the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War, a visit to Cork City Gaol is a must. At the castle-like former prison you’ll learn about Cork life through the ages, with guided tours included in the price of admission.

We recommend: choosing the audio set if you don’t want to wait for the next guided tour

Crawford Art Gallery
Whether you’re an art aficionado or simply enjoy wandering through peaceful galleries and exhibitions, Crawford Art Gallery is a great place to learn more about local artists spanning paint, print and sculpture.

We recommend: checking out the Roman sculptures that came to the gallery from the Vatican in the early 19th century
