Doctoralia

Doctoralia is the perfect companion app when traveling, whether in the UK or abroad, to help you if you need to find a doctor or A&E quick. It swiftly uses your location to flag nearby doctor’s surgeries, A & Es, dentists and whole range of specialities from family planning to psychology. The app is free and can be used in a range of countries, including many in Europe and America. Doctoralia is available on both the App Store and Google Play.

AroundMe

With the great tag line ‘Because you are going places’, AroundMe app is the perfect guide when traveling anywhere away from your home. Whether you’re hitting a new city, country or just a part of town that you are not familiar with, AroundMe can help guide you to restaurants, banks, hospitals, cinemas, supermarkets etc. anything you may need to find but not sure where to look! AroundMe is the perfect guide to help you make the most of your surroundings wherever you are in the world. This app is free and available for Android, Windows phone and is on the App Store.

Docusign

This app is a bit more business related but relevant to many who are on the go quite a bit, either travelling or out and about at the homestead. Docusign allows you to sign important documents from the app while you are mobile and without hard copy technology. So if an important contract or invoice pops up, no matter where you are, you will not be stressed trying to get it printed and returned (especially difficult if you are on holiday and not returning for a week), just sign and return remotely without any worry. This app is free and is available on the App Store, Google Play and Windows Store.

iTranslate

iTranslate is the perfect little helper when traveling abroad. All you have to do is input what you want to say and iTranslate offers an accurate translation, which can be played via speaker if you don’t feel confident speaking the language. If you buy the premium version for £2.99, it will use voice recognition to translate for you. There are 71 languages and the simple and clean design of the app makes it extremely to use, taking away any faffing when using the app out and about. The Basic version of iTranslate is free and is available on the App Store and Google Play.

Heritage App

Discover beautiful heritage sites across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland with the Heritage app offering over 1800 locations from various trusts, associations and museums. You can easily find places to explore without checking different websites and apps and it offers all the information you need to know for visiting, including directions. This app is easy to use and perfect to help you discover the gems that the UK has to offer. This app is only available on the App Store and costs £0.69.

Urbanspoon

Similar to the AroundMe app, Urbanspoon uses your location to find nearby restaurants offering name, distance, feedback, menus and price range- allowing you to find the best places to eat in the area. Urbanspoon also allows you to narrow your search by the type of cuisine you fancy, rating or budget, or alternatively, if you can’t decide what you’re in the mood for, use the ‘shake’ mode and Urbanspoon’s restaurant ‘slot machine’ will decide for you!

If you find something you like the look of but your companion/s are leaning towards something else, or there is a restaurant you want to return to, there is a ‘wishlist’ and a ‘favourites’ feature so you don’t miss out in future. Urbanspoon is free and available on Google Play, the App Store, Windows Store, Kindle Fire and Blackberry.

CamFind

Similar to Google Goggles, CamFind will find more information about any object or landmark. So if you’re out and about and something catches your eye and you want to know where to buy it, take a snap and let CamFind to the rest! Similarly if you want to know the value of a car, or if you are abroad and are struggling with the language barrier, take a picture of it and CamFind will translate. It does of course connect to social networks so you can share your findings with friends. This is one of those apps that you read about and you question whether it would actually be useful, but once you have it, you can’t remember life without it. CamFind is free and available on the App Store.

Flipboard

Flipboard is a fantastic app that combines news, magazines, and social networks, all tailored to you. You can subscribe to certain magazines, newspapers or topics and you can collect things you want to keep by creating your own magazine, such as ‘places to visit’. It also allows you to discover new content from a range of different sources by browsing topics or exploring magazines created by other users, as well as integrating your social network feeds into your flipboard making everything easy to read, share and find.

Flipboard is a great app to have while away, travelling or for those few quiet moments during the hectic daily grind. It is beautifully designed with the simple and easy to read/use flipboard style, and if you want to save articles to read later without internet connection, it connects easily to three ‘read later services’ such as Instapaper. Flipboard is free, available on the App Store, Google Play, Windows Store, and Blackberry, and is Jurys Inn’s favourite app for Home or Away….
