The Edinburgh Military Tattoo is one of the city's most visually stunning and iconic events, taking place from 5-27 August. If you're lucky enough to have picked up tickets for the annual spectacle, you'll want to make your trip to Edinburgh as special as possible.

One of the best ways to make an evening of it is to go for a delicious meal before heading to Edinburgh Castle in time to see the show. As most of the performances start at 21:00, you should have plenty of time to enjoy your dinner before you have to take your seats - make sure you double check what time the gates close before you head out, though. To help you plan your night out, we've selected a few of the city's best restaurants that are close to the castle.

Castle Terrace Restaurant

33-35 Castle Terrace

Castle Terrace is one of Edinburgh's top restaurants and it prides itself on showcasing the best of Scottish cuisine and produce. The establishment received a Michelin star just one year after opening its doors and it is renowned for the quality of its food.

Selecting the tasting menu is the best way to get a real flavour of Scotland, with this option made up of seven courses and followed by tea or coffee served with petit fours. The Celebration of the Season menu is also outstanding and only offers meals cooked using seasonal produce.

The Witchery by the Castle

352 Castlehill

The Witchery by the Castle is an atmospheric restaurant with opulent decor that serves up amazing local cuisine. What's great about this venue is that it offers a post-theatre supper menu, which can be booked between 22:30 and 23:30 if you'd rather eat after you've watched the show.

Among the dishes on its A la Carte menu are Angus beef steak tartare, Scottish seafood platter and artichoke and herb tart. The post or pre-theatre menu offers two courses and restricted choice, but you can guarantee whatever you choose will be delicious. The desserts are delightfully indulgent, too, with Madagascan chocolate tart served with orange blossom ice cream and passion fruit and mascarpone trifle accompanied by caraway biscotti among your options.

Or watch the world go by with some great city views from Leonardo Royal Hotel Edinburgh, just a 15 min walk to Edinburgh Castle.
