If you’re a fan of Doctor Who, you should be aware that not all of it is filmed in the studio! All you need is a trip to Cardiff, and we’ve got you covered!

Check out our guide below to the filming locations you can actually visit and guided tours where over 30 memorable scenes from more than 20 episodes have taken place.

Westgate Street


Remember the episode where the Doctor and Clara came across a hidden entrance to a secret alleyway? It ACTUALLY exists and it’s only 10 minutes from our Leonardo Hotel Cardiff! Walking along Westgate Street and you can find the gap in the wall that leads to a secret street.

The National Museum of Wales


Just a four minute walk away and founded in 1907, the building has been used in several episodes of Doctor Who including, ‘Dalek’, ‘The Lazarus Experiment’,’Planet of the Dead’ and ‘The Big Bang’.

Cardiff Castle


Located in the heart of Cardiff City Centre, Cardiff Castle has been used for many scenes in Doctor Who. Walk around and discover the Medieval and Victorian areas of the castle including the TARDIS library, scenes from the episode Revel Flesh plus Torchwood and Sherlock!

Roald Dahl Plass


Head towards Roald Dahl Plass, home to the secret location of The Hub and Torchwood’s headquarters. Named after the Cardiff-born author, Roald Dahl Plass is located on the Cardiff Space-Time Rift, the TARDIS can also use this spot to re-fuel on rift energy.

The Doctor Who Experience


Once you’ve finished re-fueling at Roald Dahl Plass, head towards the Doctor Who Experience – only 8 minutes away! Follow the Doctor on an interactive adventure through time and space from the beginning in the Gallifrey museum and journeying to the heart of the TARDIS. This exhibit is due to close in September 2017.

Doctor Who Cardiff Castle and City Walking Tour

For those that would prefer a fully guided walking tour – The Doctor Who Cardiff Castle and City Walking Tour is for you. The walking tour also complements the Doctor Who Cardiff Bus Tour and visits sites in Cardiff Bay and the suburbs! The guide begins just 8 minutes from our Leonardo Hotel Cardiff and will show you how terrestrial and intergalactic scenes were filmed on location in Cardiff and give you the change to follow in the footsteps of four of the Doctors and their assistants.
