David Beckham’s exclusion from the Great Britain football squad in the Olympics was a loss to football fans, but here at Leonardo Hotel's we feel it’s been the nation’s gain!

As an ambassador for the Olympics, Beckham has instead become the face of the sporting event over the past few weeks, and even with the moustache he sports a fine face. Looks aside, Beckham has provided some quality advice, not least his Best of Britain travel tips, to coincide with the re-launch of the Best of Britain app.

What’s been particularly impressive about his tips is that they haven’t been your standard, run-of-the mill, find-on-any-tourist-site tips. Beckham’s persona is very much brought to the fore throughout.

Yes, the obvious attractions are included, such as London's West End, Buckingham Palace, and Beckham’s beloved Old Trafford (though he did include Wembley, Anfield and Stamford Bridge).

Beckham didn’t deny his love for the finer things in life, when he included fancy restaurants such as The Ivy and Nobu on his list, but the man of the people catered for all budgets. He went to the heart of Britain when he called Tony Lane’s Pie and Mash Shop in Waltham Abbey, East London a “favourite”. The small venue should expect a throng of visitors over the course of the Olympics and beyond.

Beckham did return to sporting form with the suggestion of a game of golf, but encouraged visitors to make the journey up north to the Old Course at St Andrew's Links in Scotland.

Victoria may have had a hand in his tips on shopping but, let’s face it, Beckham is a bit of an aficionado himself when it comes to fashion. The touristy destinations of Portobello, Spitalfields and Camden earned a mention but he also remained loyal to Manchester, with the suggestion of the Manchester Northern Quarter.

The family man remembered the kids with his tip to visit the new Harry Potter studio tour in Watford, as well as theme parks such as Alton Towers and Thorpe Park.

The country’s royal parks were a worthy tip, with Beckham referring to Hyde, Richmond and Regents in particular.

Finally, his tip to visit Britain’s countryside for a walk and drop-in at the local pub was appreciated despite its vagueness. We like these visitor attractions because they’re free.

Respect must go to Beckham for spreading the love beyond London. A fine ‘Best of Britain’ indeed!
