Family days out in Southampton

From our hotel on Charlotte Place you can either head north along The Ave for the beautiful Southampton Common or south east, across the Itchen Bridge, to explore the beach and waterside. Below we offer two options for a nice day out with family or friends in ‘The Gateway to the World’ (that’s Southampton, by the way).

The Common

The Southampton Common is an award winning international “site of excellence” and a prime spot for UK wildlife. The Hawthorns Urban Wildlife Centre, in the south east corner of the Common, is a good place to start. There is a large interactive map detailing what kind of wildlife and habitats there are to be found in the park.

Southampton Common is great for fishing, and it’s free to do so in the park with a valid rod license. During the summer months a paddling pool is managed by a local charity, providing great entertainment for children.

It is a beautiful place to wonder around; The Common allows anyone to experience a bit of the country in the city centre. Take a long walk around the lakes and stop off at a nearby local pub for lunch. We recommend The Cowherds Public, situated nearby to the paddling pool and wildlife centre.

The Beach

If you fancy making the most of being right on the mouth of the river Itchen, which feeds into The Solent, head on down over the Itchen Bridge and explore Woolston Beach. The nearest station is Woolston, and from there head south down Victoria Road and the beach will appear on the right, just as you pass the Southampton Sailing Club.

The sailing club is a great place for amateur enthusiasts and experienced sailors alike. Make sure to inquire beforehand for bookings and the best times to sail.

The coast in these parts is lovely and the walk along this beach is great – enjoy the views and fresh air and if you walk far enough make sure to visit Weston Shore Pitch and Putt. This is a great place for a bit of family fun; something slightly different from the usual seaside activities

If you prefer to hit the water, in search of Black Bream or Bass, get yourself across the water to Hythe. The Anchorman Charter can be found a five minute walk from Hythe Marina and they offer great deals on fishing trips all over The Solent.

See what Southampton has to offer and book a city break.
