I just love the festive season, it’s my favourite time of the year. And when winter comes, Edinburgh is at its best – lights sparkle and the atmosphere is magical. If you’re looking to visit one of the best Christmas markets in all of Europe, then Scotland’s capital is your place.

My visit to the Christmas market always starts with a skating session on the circular ice rink in St Andrews Square. Your ticket includes skate hire, and after the session you can warm up with a cup of mulled wine served from the bar next to the rink. It’s a pretty special experience.

The biggest section of the market is over in East Princes Street Gardens, not far from the Square. Here you’ll find three levels of stalls where you can purchase quality gifts including clothes, jewellery, kitchenware, sweets and toys. I really recommend the handmade Lithuanian candle houses for oil and incense burning, I always pick up a couple each year. They come in various shapes and colours and can be purchased from their stall in the German market area.

The smell of food here is simply incredible; this is what Christmas is about. I usually indulge in German specialties - pretzels and bratwurst, but you can find Scottish food too. If you want to try something new there is traditional Hungarian chimney cake (Kürtőskalács), or lángos - a deep fried dough served with cheese and sour cream. You can find the Hungarian hut just opposite the Ferris wheel.

If you are feeling adventurous you can take a ride on the famous Star Flyer - I guarantee, you’ll have an amazing view over the city from 60 metres above! For the less brave (like myself) or those with children, visit Santa Land. Here you’ll find an incredible Christmas tree maze, as well as plenty of rides and attractions to choose from.

Don’t forget to visit the famous Spiegeltent on Festival Square, to catch the circus, cabaret and burlesque by famous La Clique – this one’s only for the adults! (every evening excluding Sundays).

The markets are open until 6th January 2018, each day from 10am to 10pm.
