‘Blood Brothers’, the international hit smash musical, will return to Cork for three weeks, starting on the 2nd August at the Cork Opera House.

The musical has been a hit throughout the UK for over twenty years. Produced by Bill Kenwright, it has consistently run to sold-out audiences in London and to standing ovations and great acclaim, including the prestigious Olivier Award. Cork audiences can’t get enough of this titular show, especially when it stars the first lady of Irish musical theatre, Rebecca Storm.

‘Blood Brothers’ written by Willy Russell, is based loosely upon 1844 novella ‘The Corsican Brothers’ by Alexander Dumas. Russell has updated the story, which is a nature vs. nurture tale that revolves around fraternal twins who were separated at birth. The twins were brought up in different worlds, one becoming an Oxbridge-educated councillor, and the other unemployed and in prison. They fall in love with the same girl, causing a rift in their friendship and leading to tragic deaths.

The best way to see ‘Blood Brothers’ is on tour, since that’s where it’s received its greatest success and has developed a cult following. The current West End revival is one of the longest-running musical productions in history, and it always pleases Cork audiences. There’s no better place to see ‘Blood Brothers’ than at the Cork Opera House, the only purpose-built opera house in Ireland, with its 1,000 seat auditorium and a 70-musician orchestra pit. The Cork Opera House also has one of the largest stages in Ireland, with over 235 lights and a 60-foot fly tower that accommodates up to 28 scene changes per performance.

The Cork Opera House was originally built in 1855. It even survived the burning of much of Cork by British forces in retaliation for an ambush of a military convoy by Irish rebels in 1920, but was burned down due to a combination of faulty wiring and wooden materials during its centenary year. It was rebuilt to even greater glory in 1965, and has been improved a few times since.
