November 26-27, 2010 - International Festival of Advent and Christmas Music, Prague

The year 2010 marks the twentieth anniversary of the International Festival of Advent and Christmas Music in Prague. This festival is truly international, featuring choirs from the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Croatia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia and Slovenia. Three categories of choirs will be featured: chamber choirs, big choirs (either all male, all female or mixed gender) and children's choirs.

Festival Events

Friday, November 26, is packed with events. The first event starts at 8:40 in the morning and the last event begins at 6:30 in the evening. Performances are located in many locations including the National House Smichnov, St. Nicholaus Church in Old Town Square and St. Salvator Church. Saturday is just as full of events. The first performance begins at 9:00 in the morning and the final event of the festival begins at 8:00 at night. This event features a cultural program as well as the results and awarding of prizes in each of the three competition categories.

Since this festival is also a competition, those who attend will get to hear a vast amount of music from different ensembles at high levels. Each choir gets a fifteen minute time slot in which to perform. Generally, there are more than sixty choirs that perform at this festival. This gives the listener a huge range of different styles and interpretations to listen to. The contests feature the composer, Petr Ebens, and the prizes will be awarded to the choirs who are judged to have performed his works the best. This festival is an excellent opportunity to hear an eclectic group of performers while experiencing the beautiful city of Prague.
