The Leeds Grand Theatre and Opera House is the venue that has the most to excite theatre patrons in 2012. Mixing a Romanesque and Gothic styling, this amazing venue has been open to theatre lovers since 1878.

The 2012 calendar starts off with a bang, featuring the spectacular opera, Julius Caesar in Egypt. It is an Italian opera with music by George Handel, written in 1724. This opera is roughly three hours in length and will have English subtitles. It will run from January 14 through February 12.

Next on the calendar at The Grand will be the opera classic, Madama Butterfly. This is a tale of the tragic love between a young Japanese woman and an American naval officer. The music by Puccini is a timeless score of incredible emotional depth. This show will run for a short time from February 5-18.

March will bring with it the triumphant return of the record-breaking show, Calendar Girls. Based on a true story, this show tells the tale of a group of women who convince each other to pose in the nude for a charity calendar. Buy tickets early for this one, as it sold out its run in Leeds last year. It runs from March 26-31, here is the promotional video.

From May 2 through May 19, The Grand will host one of the most popular musicals of all time, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel. This 21st century adaptation of the mid-20th century American classic will be sure to pack in the crowds.

Another great American musical will come to The Grand in the month of April. Sister Act will be onstage from April 3-14. This musical is based on the hit Hollywood move that starred Whoopi Goldberg. The show has been touring the UK, packing houses and winning rave reviews from the critics.

There are many great selections to choose from in 2012, and many of them will sell out fast. Grab tickets for the shows before they run out. This is a great year to be a theatre lover in Leeds.
