Why Aye Mate – Welcome to the UK!

Jurys Inn looks to help London 2012 Olympic tourists with guide to regional dialects

submited Tue 10 Jul, 2012

With less than a month to go to the London 2012 Olympic Games, Jurys Inn Hotels has decided to give overseas tourists visiting the UK this summer a helping hand by offering a free ‘regional greetings guide’ at each of its 25 UK city centre hotels.

The free guide will contain familiar greetings from across Britain such as ‘Ay-up midduk’ in Nottingham, ‘Ariite’ in Liverpool and ‘Alright my Luvver’ in the South West. The eight-page guide is currently available at reception desks of all Jurys Inn city centre hotels across the UK and online at JurysInns.com.

Some examples of regional greetings included in the guide are:

Hello:

  • Alright mush? - Southampton
  • Ello my lovely – South West
  • Why Aye Mate – Newcastle
  • Guid Mornin! – Glasgow/ Edinburgh
  • Top o’ ye mornin’ ter ya - Belfast
  • Ow do? – Yorkshire
  • Aah-do? – Derby

Goodbye:

  • Taraabit – Birmingham
  • Tarrah then – Nottingham
  • Tara a bit – Derby
  • Tara hinney – Newcastle
  • Take ‘er ‘andy - Belfast

Suzanne Cannon, Marketing Manager, Jurys Inn says:

“Our hotels are situated in the heart of 20 cities across the UK and we are increasingly aware that, for overseas guests in particular, our array of regional accents can sometimes be difficult to grasp. Therefore, with more tourists than ever expected to visit Britain for the Olympics this summer, we thought it a great opportunity to extend our warm welcome with a helpful guide to our cities’ favourite phrases.”

The Jurys Inn Greetings Guide has been compiled using a social media campaign which ran primarily on Twitter from March-May 2012. The campaign also awarded contributors to the guide with a chance to win a UK Hotel stay for two.
