Fancy a Kippa Tae or a Rosie Lee?

Jurys Inn looks to help London 2012 Olympic tourists with guide to regional dialects

According to Jurys Inn hotel group, there are numerous ways to ask for the classic cuppa in the UK. From the traditional ‘tea’, ‘cup of char’ and ‘cuppa’ to regional variations such as ‘brew’ in Lancashire, a ‘Kippa Tae’ in Birmingham, a ‘cuppo the tea’ in Exeter, a ‘rosie lee’ in London, ‘tae’ in Northern Ireland, ‘panad’ in Wales or even a ‘scooby do’ in Manchester, it seems each region has its own name for Britain’s favourite hot drink.

With just over a month to go to the 2012 Olympics, Jurys Inn Hotels has decided to give our 2012 tourists a helping hand this summer by offering a free ‘regional greetings guide’ at each of its 24 city centre hotels.


Some examples include:

  1. ‘Brew’ in Lancashire
  2. ‘Kippa Tae’ in Birmingham
  3. ‘Cuppo the tea’ in Exeter
  4. ‘Rosie lee’ in London
  5. ‘Tae’ in Northern Ireland
  6. ‘Panad’ in Wales
  7. ‘Scooby do’ in some parts of Manchester

As the countdown begins with just over a month to go until the Olympic's opening ceremony, the free guide will contain familiar phrases from across the UK and will be available at the reception desk of all Jurys Inn city centre hotels across the UK and online at JurysInns.com from the end of June.

Therefore, with more tourists than ever expected to visit Britain for the Olympics this summer, we thought it a great opportunity to extend our warm welcome with a helpful guide to our cities’ favourite phrases.”


The Jurys Inn Greetings Guide
has been compiled using a social media campaign which ran primarily on Twitter from March-May 2012. The campaign also awarded contributors to the guide with a chance to win a UK Hotel stay for two.
