Birmingham is best for business this Summer

Ahead of London hosting the 2012 Olympic Games, Jurys Inn reveals the UK’s alternative cities for business trips this Summer

Jurys Inn, the Best Independent Hotel Brand 2012, has revealed the top ten most popular cities in the UK for business travellers as alternatives to London when the British capital plays host to the world during the Olympic Games this Summer.

With the Olympic Games just two months away, Birmingham was revealed as the most popular UK business destination as an alternative to London with nearly a fifth of us choosing it as our city of preference for a business trip, closely followed by Brighton, according to the Jurys Inn Business Traveller Survey 2012.

The survey, conducted by Jurys Inn and Cross Country Trains, polled 1000 business travellers across the UK.  London was unsurprisingly the first choice for business trips however, with the Diamond Jubilee celebrations taking place in the capital as well as the 2012 London Olympic Games, accommodation space will be limited in the capital this Summer. 

After London, the most popular cities for business travellers during the July 27th – August 12th Games are:

  1. Birmingham
  2. Brighton
  3. Edinburgh
  4. Manchester
  5. Belfast
 
  1. Glasgow
  2. Liverpool
  3. Leeds
  4. Newcastle
  5. Exeter

Says Suzanne Cannon, Group Marketing Manager for Jurys Inn: “We’re all excited about the Olympic Games coming to London, however we appreciate business leaders may be thinking in the short term of holding their meetings in other UK cities just for the Summer. It’s good to know we’re in the most popular cities chosen for business trips and whether it's Birmingham or Glasgow, at Jurys Inn we offer the business traveller a smart buying choice and a credible alternative to a four star hotel without compromising on comfort or service."

The survey also looked at the impact of selecting a hotel for a business trip. Results revealed that the Welsh are most concerned about value for money with 30% choosing price over any other factor.  The Survey also revealed:

  • 71% of East Anglians, 56% of those polled in the North West and 52% of those polled in Northern Ireland all choose location over cost when planning a business trip
  • 30% of business travellers in the East Midlands feel staying at a brand name hotel is an important factor when choosing a hotel
  • 33% of business travellers in the North West see a business trip as proof their employer values them
  • 30% of business travellers in Northern Ireland see a business trip as a short break
  • 42% of those polled in the South East would choose to stay in a hotel the night before an important business meeting


Jurys Inn recently won the 2012 Award for Best Small or Independent Hotel Brand for the second time. The judges said “Jurys Inn ticked all the boxes from the perspectives of both the buyer and traveller, and represented excellent value for money”.  Some of the key elements that impressed the judges were; the new Jurys Business Booker tool, the launch of a Superior Room Upgrade Package, a revamped Jurys Rewards loyalty programme, mobile website development, the overall quality and consistency of the product and the friendly and dedicated employees. The hotel group is also delighted to announce it has become the first international hotel group to receive AIM accreditation from the MIA, the industry’s only accreditation which is committed to driving up standards of the UK’s meetings industry.
