Irish hotel guests favour bran flakes over the traditional fry-up

submited Thu 14 Aug, 2014
  • Jurys Inn breaks down the breakfast habits of its 1 million guests this year so far
  • Irish guests increasingly health conscious but not foregoing their creature comforts of copious cups of tea

Irish hotel guests are watching their waistlines and shunning the traditional fry-up in favour of a healthier continental breakfast according to new figures released by Jurys Inn. The hotel group, which has 29 hotels across Ireland and the UK, analysed the breakfast habits of the 1 million people who they have dished up breakfast to so far this year and the results are in…

The figures show that while we Irish may think we have a love affair with the traditional fry-up, the hotel group’s British guests are in fact tucking in to almost twice as many sausages, rashers and eggs as us! Meanwhile, we’re eating 5 times more muesli and bran flakes and topping this off with 25,000 pots of probiotic yoghurt and 15,000 pieces of fruit.

The health conscious Irish are also steering clear of white bread, eating just 3,640 slices per week compared to over 5,800 slices of hearty brown bread. Meanwhile, we are also chomping down on 3,500 bananas, with the humble yellow snack taking the top spot as Ireland’s most loved fruit.

We’re not forgoing the nation’s beloved breakfast beverage however, with one million cups of tea being consumed across the hotel group in the first six months of this year alone. Meanwhile, orange juice remains a morning staple, with the Jurys Inn’s Irish hotels pouring an average of 110 litres per week.

When it comes to the full Irish breakfast, in the first six months of this year alone the Irish have eaten 198,000 sausages, 318,000 rashers, 97,000 hash browns and 199,000 eggs!

Commenting on the figures, Suzanne Cannon, Group Marketing Manager for Jurys Inn noted, “Serving up breakfast to thousands of people every day, we like to provide our customers with a range of options to start the day. While it’s undoubtable the “Full Irish” will always have a place in the nation’s heart, it’s great to see that our guests are also embracing a healthy lifestyle by feasting on fruit and cereals for what we all know is the most important meal of the day!”

Jurys Inn has over 7,000 rooms across 30 hotels in total located in Ireland, the UK and the Czech Republic and prides itself on providing consistently high levels of customer service and quality in excellent city centre locations.
