West Cork Literary Festival 2011

Posted at June 22, 2011
West Cork in southwest Ireland boasts some of the country’s most breathtaking scenery, and it also hosts one of the most prestigious literary festivals in the UK and Ireland—the West Cork Literary Festival, which will take place between Sunday 3 July and Saturday 9 July this year.

This year, festival organiser West Cork Music is proudly presenting new, established, and as they say, “even dead writers”—those who have gone before. They’ll be honoring these authors often this year, starting off with a special reading of some great passed masters, and continue to feature them throughout the week-long festival.

The festival will feature a wide range of literature. Some of the finest still living writers, playwrights, poets, and musicians from Ireland and the world will be present. For example, Dermot Healy will read from his new novel ‘Long Time No See’. Carlo Gébler will speak about the writer’s craft. Paul Murray will read from his ‘Skippy Dies’, which was recently in the finals of the U.S. National Book Critics Circle Award. Poet Dairena Ní Chinnéide, accompanied by Rónán Ó Snodaigh of Kíla, will read her work. Actor David Soul will present the work of Pablo Neruda during a unique musical concert.

Workshops, as always, are the heart of the festival, featuring courses on fiction writing, poetry, memoirs, freelance journalism, travel-writing, historical writing, and stage writing. The long-standing tradition of spotlighting children’s literature continues in its many free workshops and events for all ages.

The Festival will close with a Literary Tea on Saturday July 9th, hosted by Lynn Truss, author of the best-seller ‘Eats, Shoots, and Leaves’ as well as a ‘Gala Celebration of Dead Authors’. Literature has always been an important part of Irish life and culture, so the West Cork Literary Festival is sure to be educational, inspiring, and enjoyable. If you would like to experience this then check out one of the Jurys Inn hotels in Cork to book your place now.
