As if London didn’t have enough attractions to keep visitors entertained, the newest tourist activity is set to bring the London experience to all new levels! Travellers visiting this summer will have the option of visiting London’s newest tourist attraction- a cable car stretching over the iconic Thames River, constructed under the sponsorship of Emirates Air Line and is set for its inaugural trip in the last week in June. A cable car line, measuring 1 km, supports a gondola transporting passengers between the Royal Docks and Greenwich Peninsula. Construction of the new cable line began in the summer of 2011 at a cost of £60 million.

The first travellers to take advantage of the new Emirates Air Line cable over the Thames will be pioneers of sorts because this is the first urban cable car in operation anywhere in the United Kingdom. This unique mode of transit is expected to be able to carry 2500 passengers every hour, eliminating the need for 50 buses on the ground, with the trip expected to take a quick but breath-taking 5 minutes each way. Local officials have praised the new cable car service for providing employment as well as reliable transportation for the east side of the city.

How much does the Thames Cable Car cost?

Although passengers will undoubtedly enjoy the spectacular birds-eye view from their airborne gondola perch, the trip across the Thames won't be offered free of charge. Oyster pay as you go cards can be purchased for multiple crossing trips, although a single adult fare costs £3.20, with a child's fare set at £1.60. Tourists are encouraged to purchase a 360-degree tour ticket for round-trip passage both ways, costing £6.40 and enabling passengers to see such sights as nearby Canary Wharf and Olympic Park.
