The Thackray Medical Museum in Leeds is located near the Leeds city centre and is easily accessible by public transport and never too far from the many hotels in Leeds city centre. The building was originally a medical supply company that was established in 1902 and holds over 42,000 items. When you arrive you will be able to browse a wide array of displays that will interest and educate. There is a historical Victorian display of Leeds in 1842, scientific discoveries about disease, historical hospitals and medical care, surgical discoveries, what it's like to have a baby, the Wilkinson Gallery, Life Zone and much more. This museum promises fun for both children and adults alike.

Exhibits

At the 1842 exhibit of Victorian life in Leeds, you will learn about what living conditions were like by choosing a person whose life you can follow and incorporate critical thinking to help your person survive.

In the Diseases in Retreat display you can learn about how disease was first believed to be an act of God and then how studies helped scientists discover germs. Kids can see how children worked in factories, and learn about Hannah Dyson and the trauma the young girl went through from a factory injury. This place will surely have you and your family appreciating what they may take for granted in today’s world.

Then there is Life Zone, an interactive children's gallery where kids can learn all about the human body with fun facts and exciting displays. Learn about the functions of the heart, skeletal system, muscles, and the importance of physical activity. The Wilkinson Gallery has over 600 antique apothecary jars. These were jars that were made to hold medicine ingredients. Learn all about the crazy remedies used back then to cure common ailments.

In addition to regular exhibits there are many temporary features that are displayed. Currently the museum is celebrating its fifteenth birthday and the staff and volunteers have put together a display of their most favorite and interesting items from the museum. As anyone can see there are countless things to see at the museum and much to learn for all, making it the perfect day out for anyone.
