Guinness Arthur's Day began in 2009 as a celebration of Arthur Guinness, the founder of the popular beer brand, and the 250th anniversary of the signing of the lease at St. James's Gate, Guinness's original brewery. This event will occur again in 2010 as a continued celebration of the Guinness legacy. Celebrations will occur all over the world in Ireland, Malaysia, the Caribbean and the US. However, the event will be concentrated in Dublin, which is the original home of Guinness.

Guinness Arthur's Day kicks off in Ireland with a toast to Arthur Guinness on September 23 at 17:59, in honor of the company's 1759 birth year. This toast will occur at over 30 pubs and other venues in Dublin including St. James's Gate as well as Cork and Galway. After this toast, each venue will feature live music in honor of Arthur Guinness. Over 60 world-renowned musical acts are scheduled to perform, including artists such as:

Snow Patrol KT Tunstall Kelis Paolo Nutini The Magic Numbers Mick Flannery The View

In addition to these bands, 100 new Irish bands have been chosen out of a pool of 600 through a month-long qualification process to play at Guinness Arthur's Day celebrations. Guinness did this to showcase local acts as well as to encourage the growth and evolution of the Irish music scene. This talent search, called Our Thursdays, is an effort to further expand the scope of the celebrations of Arthur's Day due the event's enormous, if somewhat unexpected, popularity in Ireland in 2009.

All proceeds from Guinness Arthur's Day go toward the Arthur Guinness Fund, which gives grants to aspiring entrepreneurs.
